There he found himself working alongside comedians like Josie Long, Stewart Lee and Stephen Merchant and in this environment of incomprehensible art wank, he flourished. In 2009 with the assistance of a Moosehead Grant he earned his first critical success with a nomination for the 2009 Barry Award at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Then in 2010, his third show ‘Secret Door’ went gangbusters and won him the Age Newspapers Critics Choice Award and garnered Asher a Best Newcomer Nomination at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2010. Josh is the son of legendary PR guru Lynne Franks, the woman who inspired Jennifer Saunders’ character Edina in Absolutely Fabulous. Raised as a Buddhist this ex-public schoolboy then trained as a Rabbi before being kicked off the programme for being caught with a naked (non-Jewish) girl. He started his own PR firm when he was just 16, received critical acclaim for writing and directing a short film for Channel 4, and has had a number of senior roles in music video production companies. And now he’s decided to settle down and get a proper job – as a stand-up comedian, which started in earnest with his first trip to the Edinburgh Fringe in 2003.
Fresh from writing and starring in his sitcom for BBC Radio 4, Josh is about to embark on a UK tour, Josh Howie’s Messed Up. Already a much in-demand standup comic, performing regularly at all the major comedy clubs around the UK, over the previous few years Josh has also taken his distinctive brand of humor to India, Ireland, UAE, France, China, Thailand, Switzerland, Finland, Estonia and America. In 2012, he was invited to perform at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, where he filmed for the internationally distributed Just For Laugh’s All Access TV show.
