Restoration
Lack of repair and regular maintenance during the past half century has allowed this impressive building to deteriorate to the point that several elements within it were at risk of passing the point beyond which economic repair would be feasible. It therefore became a priority to find a leaseholder who would also invest significant sums in the restoration of the building itself.

As a Grade II listed building within a Conservation Area, a principal element of the application focused on the restoration and preservation of the remaining original features such as the Flemish Renaissance plasterwork and the raked seating in the Upper Gallery (which remain hidden above the existing suspended ceiling), friezes, mosaics, cornicing, ornate balustrades and the distinctive proscenium arch.

The developers prepared comprehensive plans to demonstrate how they could create a landmark casino and entertainment venue and, working with theatre and historic building specialists and English Heritage, they provided the detailed attention that would ensure that the building was restored to its former glory.
